Grant Lee Phillps - Mobilize
There are times when musicans can be too artistic to appeal to a wider audience. In the case of Mobilize, Grant Lee Phillips proves that he can retain his artistic integrity and still deliver an album filled with readily accessible pop songs. This is Phillips' second solo album after splitting from the underground favorite Grant Lee Buffalo. Mobilize contains 12 excellent pop creations sung with terrific sincerity. Phillips' voice is confident and easily slips into falsetto to great effect.
The album starts out with the somber See America. From there, Phillips turns up the energy and moves into a string of well-crafted, hook-laden songs, including Love's a Mystery and We All Get a Taste. The album hits a fevered pitch with Spring Released - a near-perfect pop song that should have received a lot of attention.
But the album doesn't stop there. It moves on to the dreamy chorus of Lazily Drowning and the military sounds of the title track. Mobilize is a feast for those who love to indulge in a great pop album.
